Berlut Books was founded by Beryl Lutrin in 1999 to publish The Afrikaans Handbook and Study Guide. It has subsequently published The English Handbook and Study Guide and the Maths Handbook and Study Guides for Grades 10, 11 and Grades 12.

The English and Afrikaans books are best-sellers and are used by most of the top schools in South Africa. They were also chosen by the Department of Education for the National Recovery Plan in 2007. Over two million copies of these books have been sold. The Maths Books made their debut at the Cape Town Book Fair in July 2009 and were given a fantastic reception. They are now highly sought after and are being used in many schools as well as for additional material and reinforcement.  The Testimonials on this site bear witness to the reception these books have received. It is intended that the Maths books will soon be written for Grades 8 and 9.

Beryl Lutrin is an ex-teacher. She wrote the Afrikaans Handbook and Study Guide in 1999 from her awareness of the need for such a book. Based on the success of this book, in 2002 she wrote the English Handbook and Study Guide with Marcelle Pincus, a legendary figure in English and Speech and Drama circles. When Kevin Smith, a young Engineer who is passionate about Maths and Science, approached her with his Maths Book, she knew that this was the core of the Maths Handbook and Study Guide.

Beryl, Marcelle and Kevin are all committed to the upliftment of education in South Africa and are delighted that their books have revolutionized the teaching and learning of English, Afrikaans and Maths in South Africa.
