‘THE BOOK THAT’S TAKEN S.A. SCHOOLS BY STORM’

‘The Afrikaans Handbook & Study Guide’, written by Beryl Lutrin, was published in September 1999 and in the short time since then has been prescribed or recommended by well over 700 schools throughout the country. It is currently a South African Best Seller, which indicates the value of the book and hi-lights the demand for such a product.

Beryl Lutrin is an Afrikaans Teacher with Remedial experience, and has written the book in a simple and logical format. What makes the book unique and revolutionary is that all the explanations are in English and it is colour-coded to aid understanding, recall and application. It contains all the Taal Rules, Notes and Useful Vocabulary that students need from Senior Primary to Matric and even at a Tertiary level.

Beryl Lutrin believes that the reason why so many pupils have ‘limited vocabulary and very little grammar’, is that all their notes are thrown away each year and they start from scratch the following year, usually with a different teacher, who has a different personality, a different approach and a different emphasis. As a result, pupils think that Afrikaans is different every year and they don’t retain and apply what they have previously learnt. Her book is carried with them from Senior Primary to Matric, and they therefore become very well acquainted with the contents, and able to remember and apply it whenever necessary.

The book lends itself to use in the classroom as well as independent home study. Parents who are unable to help their children are very grateful for this. The value of the book for independent study is borne out by the fact that it is being used by hundreds of Home Schools, Damelin Correspondence College, Intec College and the Cambridge Distance Learning College.

There is an additional benefit to the learner where neither English nor Afrikaans is the mother tongue. They are able to benefit from the English as well as the Afrikaans explanations and vocabulary lists.

Beryl Lutrin’s message is that Afrikaans is an easy, friendly and uniquely South African language. The working world often demands a practical knowledge of Afrikaans and the learner should be prepared for this. The book concludes with a section called ‘Words for the New Millennium’, which she hopes will make learners realize that Afrikaans is a modern, vibrant language that has kept up with new technology and new trends – a language for the new millennium!

The South African Matric requires the learner to pass two South African languages. Afrikaans is often the key to obtaining a Matric or a University Pass.
The feedback from Teachers, Parents and Learners is that ‘The Afrikaans Handbook & Study Guide’ is resulting in an improvement in Afrikaans ability and in a more positive attitude towards the subject.

Dit gons oor dié handboek.

The Afrikaans Handbook & Study Guide het almal in Suid-Afrikaanse skole aan die praat.
Dit is besig om ‘n omwenteling in die onderrig en leerplan van Afrikaans as tweede taal op skoolvlak te veroorsaak.

Die boek, geskryf deur Beryl Lutrin, is in September 1999 gepubliseer en dit word reeds by meer as 500 skole in the land gebruik.
Dit is ook tans op die Suid-Afrikaanse lys van topverkopers, wat die waarde van die boek asook die vraag na so ‘n produk beklemtoon.

Lutrin is ‘n Afrikaans-onderwyseres met wye remediërende ondervinding.
Die boek is geskryf in ‘n eenvoudige en logiese formaat en bevat al die taalreëls, notas en nuttige woordeskat wat leerlinge sal benodig van senior primêr tot en met matriek.
Wat die boek so besonders maak, is dat alle verduidelikings in Engels is met ‘n kleurkode om die begrip en toepassing van Afrikaans vir leerlinge te vergemaklik.

Lutrin meen talle leerlinge het ‘n beperkte woordeskat en sukkel met grammatika.
Notas word elke jaar weggegooi en die leerlinge moet dikwels van voor af begin. En dit gewoonlik met ‘n ander onderwyser met ‘n ander persoonlikheid, en ‘n totaal ander benadering.
As gevolg van die probleme dink baie leerlinge Afrikaans is elke jaar anders en dat hulle nie ‘n grondslag het om op voort te bou nie.
Hulle voel hulle kan nie toepas wat hulle voorheen geleer het nie.
The Afrikaans Handbook & Study Guide word gebruik van senior primêr tot matriek sodat leerlinge goed vertroud kan raak met die inhoud.
Daar is bykomende voordele vir die leerlinge vir wie Engels of Afrikaans nie hul moedertaal is nie. Hulle vind baat by sowel die Engels as die Afrikaans in die boek.
Die boek is ideaal vir gebruik in die klaskamer asook vir studie by die huis.
Ouers wat nie in staat is om hul kinders te help nie, sal baie dankbaar wees hiervoor.
Lutrin se boodskap is dat Afrikaans maklik, vriendelik en eie aan Suid-Afrika is.

Die sakewêreld vereis soms ‘n praktiese kennis van Afrikaans en leerlinge moet hierop voorbereid wees. The Afrikaans Handbook & Study Guide sluit af met die hoofstuk “Woorde vir die nuwe millennium”.

Lutrin hoop dit sal help on leerlinge te laat besef dat Afrikaans ‘n moderne, lewendige en lekker taal is wat met die jongste tegnologie en nuwe neigings ‘n taal is vir die nuwe millennium.
Daar word van die Suid-Afrikaanse matrikulant verwag om twee Suid-Afrikaanse tale te slaag. Afrikaans is soms die sleutel tot matriek of universiteitstoelating.

Die terugvoer van onderwysers, ouers en leerlinge is dat The Afrikaans Handbook & Study Guide verantwoordelik is vir ‘n merkwaardige verbetering in Afrikaans, bemagtiging van die taal en veral die vestiging van ‘n baie meer positiewe houding teenoor die vak.
